At
Good Shepherd parish, we have a keen understanding that the people are church,
and as a people of faith, we recognize and accept the privilege to support one
another in love and service. We regularly reach out to those in need on the
local scene. However, as Catholics, we are aware that we belong to a larger
church, with people whose needs are not as immediately evident to us. In order
to more effectively respond to the needs of those people, we must join our
resources with those of our fellow Catholics throughout the Diocese. Together we
can accomplish far beyond what we could achieve individually. Through the annual
Catholic Ministries Appeal, the Church on Long Island is doing marvelous work in
caring for countless people.
We are living through a very difficult time in the Church. It is important that
we don’t lose sight of all the good the Church is doing. This appeal has been
renamed and restructured so that none of the money raised is used for
administrative purposes, but all of it serves those in need and benefits local
parishes as well. You know that I never asked you to do what I do not do myself.
I personally contribute to the Catholic Ministries Appeal and I invite you to
join me in supporting the pastoral work of the Church through the Catholic
Ministries Appeal. I especially encourage those who haven’t been aware of the
good of this appeal in the past, to consider making a pledge this year. No
pledge is too small. The more of us who make a contribution to this appeal, the
more the Church on Long Island will be at its best in giving witness to the Good
News of salvation and enabling others to experience the loving presence of our
risen Lord.
Gratefully,
Father Tom
