"Beloved,
You are my gift!", "You are God's gift to Good Shepherd". These were
the messages on the tags attached to tiny package-like favors handed out to all
who attended masses at Good Shepherd on Christmas day. At a time when many
people have become disillusioned with Church, or are angry or have just drifted
away for a variety of reasons, this gesture, born of a creative idea of one of
our parishioners, whose initiative carried it out, underscored our belief that
people are church, not buildings or institutions. In spite of what seems
increased and more determined efforts on the part of society in general to
suppress any reference to Christ at Christmas, we who believe, need all the more
to make a consistent effort to celebrate the feast in a way that shows that we
appreciate the true meaning of Christmas; to remember that in Jesus, God became
one with us, so that we could become one with God; to recommit ourselves to act
justly, to love tenderly, to walk humbly with God. Your fidelity, kindness,
compassion, thoughtfulness and generosity are expressions that you know the true
meaning of Christmas.
Thanks to the members of our environment committee and all who assisted them.
Once again the church and sanctuary were decorated with elegance and simplicity.
Their creative imagination and decorative ability reflected the festive
dimension of our liturgies. On behalf of the parish community I also want to
express gratitude to those who organized the Advent Vespers which helped to
provide a prayerful, reflective preparation for Christmas.
Special thanks are in order for all who faithfully contributed their time and
talents through the various liturgical, musical, pastoral, educational and human
services offered, as well as for those whose exercise of stewardship is not in
the public eye, yet whose ministry and service have been a benefit to the
parish. As reported in the bulletin, over forty thousand dollars were
contributed in the Christmas collection, but in itself, that doesn't reflect the
other contributions you made. Thousands of dollars worth of money, gift
certificates, food and other gifts were donated Ninety families in the parish
were served.
Your prayers, affirmation and loving concern are always a welcome gift to us on
the Pastoral Ministry Staff. We are grateful for all who through loving words,
gifts, cards, candy and baked goods, have expressed affirmation and support. We
welcomed three new members to the Staff during this past year. As I come to the
completion of my twenty third year of service at Good Shepherd, I want to
personally express my gratitude for your trust, care and love during these
difficult times. It is a great privilege and joy to be your pastor.
Shortly before 2004 drew to a close, the world was shocked by the horrific loss
of life and damage done by the tsunami. As I write this, plans are in place to
take up a special collection for tsunami relief. I am confident that you will
respond with your usual compassion and generosity.
Despite natural disasters, war and terrorism, as well as the suffering and pain
we humans cause one another, we can look forward to this year 2005 with hope,
courage and confidence, because Emmanuel, God is with us. May the God who is
Love heal hearts that are broken, calm those who are frightened, rekindle hope
in those who live in despair. May we tear down the walls of hatred, anger,
suspicion, prejudice and fear that isolate and separate us, and in their place,
with acts of mercy, forgiveness, compassion, trustworthiness and loving
kindness, let us build bridges reaching out to others.
In love and laughter, in hopes and dreams, in wisdom and grace, may we enjoy
this new year 2005 together.
Gratefully yours in Christ Jesus,
Fr. Tom
