There's a new book on the market entitled "Excellent Catholic Parishes", authored by Paul Wilkes and published by Paulist Press. According to the blurb on the book jacket, the book shows how all kinds of parishes can be successful; disproves the myth that a lack of priests and resources is what holds parishes back from excellence; puts the three keys of success - vision, energy and hope- within the reach of every parish. Eight parishes from across the United States are featured. The author has researched those parishes and gives details about their points of excellence.

In the next section the author offers common traits of excellent parishes, which is followed by a points of excellence index that illustrates with actual examples that challenge parishes who would strive to be church in a way that makes the love of Jesus real.

The last section is an index of "excellent parishes". There are listed over three hundred parishes with a capsule summary of what each does well. Among the twenty two parishes from the state of New York, there are four from the Diocese of Rockville Centre. I am pleased and proud to say that our own parish of the Good Shepherd is one of those four. According to the summary, emphasis on lay ministry; consolation ministry; RCIA and Small Church Communities are reflective of what we do well. The parish address is correct, but the web site listed is out of date. If you are reading this, you obviously know the correct one.

As Archbishop Weakland, one of the book reviewers, wrote, there is " much in this book to reflect on, debate about even argue over. It will serve its purpose by stimulating your thought and forcing you to mark out your own criteria." I have purchased a copy of the book, and eventually will have a copy placed in our parish library. I*m sure it will serve as one of the resources our Pastoral Council and Staff will use in discerning the areas for growth.
