Basic Principles
for a Small-Group Sharing
1. Share yourself. Let people know you
to the extent you are willing. How you feel and how you look at life
matters.
2. Speak in the first person. Use "I"
statements. Do not presume to know how others feel.
2. Listen closely to others. Don’t give
advice, counsel or therapy or comment on what others say, but let people
know you understand and are trying to appreciate the feeling they are
expressing. Understanding does not always mean agreement.
3. Never argue your point or badger another.
Be yourself, be firm, but don’t try to win others over to your
viewpoint. People can be different. In fact, differences enhance a group.
4. Don’t talk about people behind their backs
within the group or outside the group.
5. Nothing said leaves the small group.
Total & Complete Confidentiality is vital for this to be prayer. |

Listen
When I ask you to listen to me, and you start giving me
advice, you have not done what I asked.
When I ask you to listen to me, and you begin to tell me
why I shouldn’t feel that way, you are trampling on my feelings.
When I ask you to listen to me and you feel you have to do
something to solve my problems, you have failed me, strange as that may
seem.
Listen: All that I ask is that you listen,
not talk or do – just hear me.
When you do something for me that I can and need to do for
myself, you contribute to my fear and inadequacy.
But when you accept as a simple fact that I do feel what I
feel, no matter how irrational, then I can quit trying to convince you and
get about that business of understanding what’s behind those feelings.
So, please listen and just hear me.
And, if you want to talk, wait a minute for your turn –
and I’ll listen to you.

Suggested Prayer Format
1. Opening Prayer:
This can be as simple as the Psalm for the
upcoming Sunday. It is a good idea to take the theme for the opening
prayer from the gospel reading or the liturgical season.
2. Gospel Reading: The list of
readings for the upcoming week can be found in the bulletin or in some of
the resources. It is not necessary for all to have a copy of the readings.
It is best if they listen as the Word is proclaimed.
3. A few minutes of Quiet Time to focus on the
readings, read the commentary and ponder the questions: By giving
people time to organize their thoughts, they will be more attentive to the
sharings of others instead of thinking about what they are going to say at
their turn.
4. Commentary: A short commentary is
best. A good commentary helps you focus on the readings as they effect
your life.
5. Faith Sharing Questions: The
questions should focus on the heart and not the head. Not "what do you
think about..." but "how do you feel about..." They should not be
questions that can be answered with a "yes" or "no". The following
question can be used with any reading along with the other questions.
It creates a dynamic for independent thought and the Spirit. "How
does the word, phrase, or image that struck you from this week’s
scriptures speak to your life or the life of the community, your family or
our world these days?" |
