My Brothers & Sisters,
I’d like to give you a little background on myself. I grew up in Huntington,
where my mother was a teacher and my father a businessman. After he retired he
spent twenty five years working to get low income housing built.
My younger brother Jerry still lives in Huntington with his wife Kandy. Yes,
Kandy Kane. Jerry is a clinical psychologist and Kandy is a teacher. They have
two children, Christopher who is in college and Colby who is starting high
school.
My sister Ellen, another teacher, and her husband Fred are retired and live in
Scottsdale and California. They have three grown children and five
grandchildren. They all live in California and all are attorneys. We run to
teachers and lawyers.
I was ordained in Rome in 1967, and can still speak some Italian. I have served
in several parishes in the Diocese. I also taught for ten years in the Seminary
and was a Trappist Monk for four years. Recently I was pastor at St. John’s in
Riverhead for twelve years. It was there that I developed asthma; and so, after
my second term as pastor, I decided I could best continue to serve as an
associate pastor.
The last three years I was at St. Catherine’s in Franklin Square; and it was
great. This last year I had a lot of ‘trouble’ with my eyes. I’ll be nice and
not tell you all the things they did to me. The doctors were wonderful and saved
some sight in my left eye. But reading, driving, and getting the toothpaste onto
the brush are difficult.
So I come to Good Shepherd with certain physical limits, but my heart is more
peaceful and prayerful than ever. I thank God for bringing me here to join you
at Good Shepherd.
Peace,
Tom Kane
