Advent 2001 Vespers
Theme: No Room In The Inn
Traditionally, Vespers at Good Shepherd are prayed
on Mondays at 8pm during Advent and Lent. The
people in our chapel are divided into two sides
with each side praying and responding to the other
side. The sides are represented here by two
different colors of text. If you are praying alone
please pray both colors.
INTRODUCTION
Many of us come to the Advent season every year
like a combination of Martha and Mary when Jesus
is coming for dinner. Part of us wants to sit
attentive at His feet, and part of us is too busy,
our hearts distracted by many things. In years
past during Advent Vespers, we have reflected on
some of the things that distract us during this
season. This year, I think that the events of
September 11 have so impacted everyone's lives
that it would be appropriate to look at the
effects of that day. Three things came to mind in
my own reflection over the past few months: fear,
anger, and violence. I think that most, if not all
or us, have been and still are experiencing these
feelings, and perhaps they have so filled our
hearts and minds that, like the inn of old, there
is no room in us for Christ to be born. During
Vespers each week we will look at each of these
topics and pray for the grace to put them in
perspective and to let go of what we can. We will
only have the opportunity to join together for
prayer on three of the Mondays of Advent because
the fourth Monday is Christmas Eve. But a fourth
week will be available here. Also, for the first
time, Vespers is available to you "on line" at the
Good Shepherd Website. Please feel free to check
it out, and tell people who are homebound or
unable to join us on Monday nights that they can
join us in spirit by going on line.
And now we welcome you all as we join together in
prayer.
