KEEPING THE SABBATH

Recently the Holy Father issued a letter exhorting Catholics to keep the Sabbath holy. Here are some thoughts as you reflect upon this day of holiness.

This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. As you awaken each day you probably think about the day that lies ahead and what you must accomplish, Sunday is not just any day, it is a special day in feeling and spirit, it is a day of celebrating for all Christians. We need to make this day special for ourselves and our families.

By Sunday morning all your chores should be completed so that the day can truly be one of relaxation and celebration. Your shopping should be done thereby, you are not asking others to serve you on the sabbath. The house should be in order by using Saturday to wash cars, clean, vacuum, and do the wash. All members of the family should participate so that Sunday can be that day of rest and celebration. Perhaps on Saturday night the family can gather and listen to the Gospel Reading for Sunday and reflect on same..

On Sunday morning prior to leaving your house gather the family together and say a prayer as you depart to join with the Good Shepherd family for the celebration of Eucharist. This prayer can be as simple as, "Let 's go and praise the Lord". Wear your Sunday best. Sunday clothes are a metaphor for our baptismal garments.

As you gather on this day to share your meal, ascribe to a member of the family the thanksgiving prayer at meal. It is now time for play and relaxation. Resolve not to do unnecessary work. Family members or friends can take turns planning the day's activity.

Whatever you undertake to do on Sunday, do it without haste or anxiety. Sunday is a day to resolve and refresh oneself. Sunday is the day to become fully human.
