Charity and Social Justice go hand in hand,
but the two terms are often confused

Charity   Justice
private & individual acts of caring   public, political, collective action for change
responds to immediate need   responds to long-term cause
directed toward effects of
social injustice
directed toward causes of social injustice
provides direct service - food,
clothing, shelter
promotes social change in institutions, policies, and systems
satisfying, usually
non-controversial
  exciting, sometimes controversial

This table was taken from Acting For Justice: A Resource for Parish Social Action Office for Social Justice of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
