Jesus Is Condemned to Death

Minister: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you.

All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

As soon as morning came, the chief priests with the elders and the scribes, that is, the whole Sanhedrin, held a council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate (Mk 15:1).

Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus called Messiah?" They all said, "Let him be crucified!" But he said, "Why? What evil has he done?" They only shouted the louder, "Let him be crucified!" When Pilate saw that he was not succeeding at all, but that a riot was breaking out instead, he took water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd. Then he released Barabbas to them, but after he had Jesus scourged, he handed him over to be crucified (Mt 27:22-26).

Jesus Continues to Be Condemned :
Long Island has some of the best schools in the world. Our high-tech economy demands well-educated workers. But, not every Long Island school is a success. Many Long Island children in poor communities receive an inferior education. There are over 250,000 adult Long Islanders who do not have a high school diploma. Many of these people may be condemned to poverty because they lack a basic education needed to survive and succeed on the Island. Like Jesus, their fate is controlled by systems and leaders who washed their hands - in this case, families or schools that failed in their responsibility to provide every child with a quality education.

Our Response to Christ's Suffering
All: Lord Jesus, help us walk in your steps. Lord, help us not to criticize our neighbors who may have been the victims of neglectful parents or failing schools. Give us the strength to support programs that educate children and adults for lives of self sufficiency on Long Island.
