LITURGY CORNER
What is Pentecost?
Pentecost, a word meaning "fiftieth", is celebrated fifty days after Easter.  It was on Pentecost that the Holy Spirit was sent to the disciples, empowering them to spread the Good News of salvation. 'Suddenly from up in the sky there came a noise like a strong, driving wind which was heard all through the house where they were seated. as of fire appeared, which parted and came to rest on each of them.  All were filled with the Holy Spirit.  They began to express themselves in foreign tongues and make bold proclamations as the Spirit prompted them.  'Acts 2
Pentecost is one of the three "mega-festivals" in the Christian calendar.  Christmas, the gift of God's one and only Son and Easter, Christ's triumph over the power of sin and death would be of no benefit to us if the Holy Spirit did not give us the gift of saving faith.  Through the Word and Sacraments, the Holy Spirit gives us the power to believe and trust in Christ as our Savior.  Pentecost is the great festival that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Red, the liturgical color used on the feast of Pentecost, symbolizes not only the tongues of fire which descended on the apostles, but also an awareness of the empowerment from God upon the disciples to proclaim Jesus' death, resurrection and promise of salvation throughout the world.
We invite all to wear red next Sunday, May 11, the feast of Pentecost, as a reminder that we, too, are filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit and are called to be messengers of the Gospel to all we meet.
